Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has cut the sod for a rubber plantation project at Assin Nsuta, Central Region on 29th April,2022. It is a project taken on by the Anglican Diocese Of Accra(ADOA) with the support of the Government of Ghana. The project is expected to cost 1.8million euros. It is funded by the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB).
The 826 acres rubber plantation project is the biggest project in the rubber industry. The Vice President called the project a “game changer” and said that: “it will provide nourishment for many industrial establishments”.
He passionately said -”I am very excited today, this is a very important undertaken and we cannot afford to let it fail”.
Dr. Bawumia also said that he is very proud to support this venture taken by the church. He said it will help create decent jobs for the youth in the area and contribute to the socio economic development of the country in the long run.
The Vice President said natural rubber production is very important because it will not only reduce the cost of import but also contribute greatly to the country’s GDP.
He assured that the Government is ready to support private entities and partner faith based institutions to take on productive ventures such as this one.
Dr. Bawumia continued to express Government’s support for the project. He said that it is in line with the Government’s Planting For Food and Jobs initiative,Export and the ‘1 District 1 Factory’ project introduced by President Nana Akufo-Addo.
He also urged other faith based institutions to copy the efforts of ADOA, saying funnily that churches “come as credible investors and very soon we will have one church one plantation”.
Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Benito Owusu Bio, on behalf of the Sector Minister, also appealed to the Anglican Diocese across the country to actively participate in the upcoming national tree planting exercise. The exercise, dubbed the ‘Green Ghana Day’,will take place on June 10,2022.
He said arrangements are being made for the distribution of seedlings of various tree species. The seedlings will be distributed through all regional and district forestry offices to selected locations for collection.
Honourable Bio also spoke of the Ministry’s efforts to help process land documents for the rubber plantation and other related issues. He encouraged them to aim at expanding the plantation. This will make it a sustainable source of revenue to the church and for the benefit of its members.

The Managing Director for ADOA, Rev. Canon Ebenezer Jones Okai spoke of the readiness of Faith based institutions to work with Government to ensure the sustainability of the rubber plantation project. He also called on the Church and the locals from Assin Nsutem to be key stakeholders in the project to ensure effective collaboration.
The Chief of Assin Nsuta Nana Dr. Ohemeng Owhere V gave a brief history of the Assin Nsuta land acquired for the project. He said that the land was originally a stool land which was later vested as a State Land in the 1970s. Nana Dr. Ohemeng V however added that the land has been leased to ADOA for the project.
“We have not sold the land but rather we have leased the land to ADOA,”
– he said.
He however called on his subjects to cooperate fully with ADOA for the start of the project.
The Central Regional Minister, Hon. Justina Marigold Assan said Government is committed in supporting individuals and organizations in the area of production especially Agriculture. She said the collective responsibility of all, is to come together and help Government to succeed as agents of development.
