There was confusion Saturday morning at the New Juaben North constituency office of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) after executives of the party failed to open nomination for the polling station elections.
It is estimated that more than one hundred members of the party were stranded at the party office because it was locked, denying them the opportunity to pick up nomination forms to contest at the polling station level.
The modus operandi of the constituency executives and Member of Parliament Nana Adjei Boateng, according to some enraged NPP members, has been a part of a grand scheme over the years, they claim.
Some of the executives’ relatives and friends, they claim, receive the forms, which prevents others from filing a challenge.
Members of the party who were outraged demanded that the national Executives question one Simon Tawiah, who is in charge of the election, about why he purposely locked the party office when nominations opened today.
The stranded members have therefore appealed to the party’s general secretary, John Boadu, to intervene as soon as possible to avoid clashes, stating that they will resist any attempts to prevent them from participating in the election.
When their grievances were not addressed immediately, they threatened to have the polling station election in the constituency halted by an order of the court.
In some parts of the Eastern Region, there has been a mad dash to get nomination forms for the polling station elections, prompting a stampede for nomination forms. Saturday
For example, in the Abuakwa North Constituency, throngs of party members flocked to the constituency office in the middle of the night to sleep while they awaited the forms.
The ruling New Patriotic Party announced a timetable for the election of Executives from polling stations to the National level, which will begin this month and continue until the end of the year.
This will be followed on 20th February by the Polling Station Elections, which will take place across all polling stations in the country, according to a statement from The People’s Party of India.
As of now, the Party has issued a code of conduct to regulate the conduct of party members in both presidential and parliamentary primaries ahead of the 2024 elections in order to avoid some of the harmful mistakes that were made in the 2020 elections.
“The code of conduct has been formulated by Article 18 of the New Patriotic Party’s constitution, and it is applicable to party supporters and actors, including government appointees, ministers, members of governing boards/councils, chief executive officers of governmental institutions, members of parliament, metropolitan, municipal, and district chief executives, aspirants/potential candidates, and their supporters,” the statement read. ”
Meanwhile, Michael Oteng Adu, a candidate for the position of Eastern Regional Second Vice Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party, has urged members of the party to elect competent and committed individuals to serve as polling station executives.
He advised members of the party to avoid voting for aspirants who are backed by factions and who will resign from their positions when the situation calls for it.
