The Bono Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party, Kwame Baffoe, has been granted GHS 100,000 bail with two sureties who must surrender their passports at the court registry.
Mr. Baffoe, populaly known as Abronye DC, was arrested over assertions that former President John Mahama was trying to organize a coup. The case has been rescheduled for March 9, 2022.
Mr. Baffoe’s lawyers argued that he is a well-known public figure and a farmer with two residences in the country.
His lawyers told the court that he will appear in court whenever necessary.
The Ghana Police Service had no objections to the bail request, and the judge recognized that the case was a misdemeanor, thus he was given bail.
Mr. Baffoe was detained by the Accra Regional Command on Tuesday after he accepted their invitation to investigate the claims.
He was then charged with dissemination of fake news and offensive conduct conducive to a breach of peace.
Mr. Baffoe has pled not guilty to all of the accusations leveled against him.
According to the police, a preliminary inquiry found that his allegations against the former NDC Flagbearer are false, unfounded and likely to cause a breach of the peace.
Abronye DC’s claims
Mr. Baffoe is claimed to have stated that Mr. Mahama met with Al-Qaeda extremists to discuss ways to destabilize the ruling party.
He stated Mr. Mahama approached the group in an attempt to re-capture power by fair or foul means.
In response to the arrest of #Fix The Country convener Oliver Mawuse Barker-Vormawor, the NPP spokesperson made these claims on Hot 93.9 FM in Accra.
